Literally Anyone Can Copy Kristen Bell’s Workout Routine

Kristen Bell is refreshingly honest and down-to-earth. So it’s no surprise that her fitness routine is totally relatable, too. She doesn’t typically hit up ~fancy~ boutique fitness classes six days a week or travel with personal trainers—she’s a working mom who’s just trying to fit in workouts to feel good, physically and mentally.

That doesn’t mean she exactly enjoys working out though. “I hate them all,” Bell tells SELF. “But they make me feel good so I keep coming back.” Living healthfully is a priority for Bell—even if she doesn’t love working out. Bell is on a mission for more families to have that opportunity too, so she’s partnered with Thrive Market on their petition to make food stamps available for use on online food markets. “It just seems, to me, like a no-brainer,” she says.

Another no-brainer for Bell—getting active, even when she really doesn’t want to. Here are seven of her fitness habits that you can definitely incorporate into your own healthy-living routine.

1. Bell does Pilates and runs (even though she sort of hates it).

“I jog because it makes me feel the best, despite how much I loathe it,” she says. “But I just put on a podcast on and that gets me through it.” When she’s not busy jumping on the treadmill or jogging around her neighborhood, Bell will do Pilates. “In the long-term, it makes my body feel better. [I have] better posture and muscle tone, and I really like the way Pilates isolates individual muscle groups.”

2. Bell is all about workout videos on–wait for it—YouTube.

Most days, Bell just turns to YouTube to get her sweat on. “There are tons of videos online, and you can get them at every length,” she says. “Whether I only have 10 minutes to do it, or if I have 30 minutes or three minutes, I find the Internet to be a really great source to stay within the parameters of my schedule.” She’s definitely not a creature of habit when it comes her go-to channels, though. “They’re pretty random when I choose them!”

3. She also has a DVD-sharing rotation with her friends.

When she’s not YouTubing her workouts, Bell is still a fan of the video routine, so she and her friends came up with a genius plan to keep them from getting bored of the same workout. “My friends and I circulate DVDs,” says Bell.

“If I’m all by myself with both kids, which happens often, I’ll sometimes put on a yoga DVD and all three of us will do it together,” she says. “And, sure, they’re climbing all over me and it makes it very difficult…I just turn it into muscle building and pretend that they’re little weights that are attached to my back or my ankles! And they put my balance to the test, too—in any yoga position, they will try to knock me over.”

“It’s an easy way for me to get something good in for myself while not ignoring my kids,” she adds. “And also I think it’s a really nice example for them.”
